We encourage you to care for your Balmuir items with the attention they deserve. With thoughtful care, accessories, clothing and home textiles made from natural materials can be enjoyed for years to come – and may even be cherished by more than one generation.

Cashmere

Pilling is a natural characteristic of cashmere. It will gradually diminish over time with regular wear and proper care.

We recommend airing knitwear regularly and treating stains with spot cleaning wherever possible. To minimise wear on the material, knitwear should be washed in water as infrequently as necessary. To minimise wear on the material, knitwear should be washed only when needed and in accordance with the care instructions. Always wash with similar colours and turn the the knitted item inside out before washing. Knitwear may also be washed inside a large laundry bag, if preferred.

If loose fibres or pills appear on the surface, remove them gently using a clothes brush, brushing in the direction of the knit in both directions (generally from top to bottom and from bottom to top). Placing a cushion inside the garment can provide a suitable surface and help support the knit while brushing. If necessary, you may also carefully use a fabric shaver. We do not recommend treating the entire surface if it’s not needed, as repeated or extensive use may gradually thin the garment. Please note that we do not recommend using overly intensive care methods.

During the finishing process of the Helsinki Scarf, a natural, soft layer of surface fibres develops on the fabric. Please note that the Helsinki Scarf should not be treated with a cashmere comb or other overly intensive care tools. A fabric shaver may be used, if needed, with care: while it will not damage the structure of the fabric, it does remove surface fibres. Repeated or extensive use may gradually thin the scarf. The best care for the Helsinki Scarf is airing, steaming and spot cleaning.

The soft, plush texture of brushed cashmere can be restored by steaming or gentle brushing.

100% cashmere items may, when necessary, be machine washed at 30°C using a wool detergent and a low spin speed. To preserve the condition of the fibres, it is particularly important that the temperature remains consistent throughout the wash cycle. For this reason, washing a wool or cashmere item in a modern washing machine can actually be gentler and safer than hand washing.

We recommend drying knitwear flat to prevent it from stretching while damp on a hanger. Knitwear should never be tumble dried.

We recommend storing knitwear loosely folded rather than on a hanger.

For spot treatment, gall soap or a gentle stain-removing soap may be used locally when necessary.

Mohair

We do not recommend using a mohair brush or cashmere comb on mohair-wool blend garments.

Please note that we do not recommend washing Aurora Kid Mohair pieces in water. For Aurora Kid Mohair, we recommend airing the item gently brushing it with a clothes brush and treating stains locally as the preferred methods of care.

Alpaca

Cotton

Cotton pieces are practical and easy to care for. Most cotton items can be machine washed at 40–60°C. Balmuir’s cotton home textiles can be washed at 60°C. Always wash the item with similar colours and turn them inside out, when possible, before washing.

If a thread loop appears on the terry surface of a cotton towel, we recommend trimming it rather than pulling it.

Tumble drying helps to maintain the softness of cotton towels.

Linen

Linen is naturally easy to care for as a material. Most linen items can be machine washed at 40°C. Always wash items with similar colours and turn them inside out before washing.

Tumble drying helps to maintain the softness of linen towels.

Linen may release some lint, particularly during the first few washes. We recommend checking and cleaning the washing machine’s lint filter after the first few washes.

Ramie

Ramie is a naturally easy to care for as a material. Ramie items can be machine washed at 40°C. Always wash items with similar colours and turn them inside out before washing.

Silk

We recommend dry cleaning as the preferred method of care for silk items. However, depending on the item, silk may also be machine washed at 30°C using a detergent suitable for silk and wool and a gentle spin cycle.

Always wash with similar colours and turn the silk item inside out before washing. Silk scarves may be placed in a laundry bag for added care. Allow silk pieces to dry naturally, loosely arranged either on a hanger or laid flat.

We recommend gently steaming silk garments. To help protect the fabric, place a cloth over the steamer nozzle to prevent water droplets from encountering the silk. Alternatively, silk can be ironed carefully, preferably on the reverse side and, if necessary, through a gauze cloth.

Triacetate

Triacetate garments can be machine washed at 30°C using a normal wash cycle. Always wash with similar colours and turn the garment inside out before washing.

We recommend gently steaming triacetate garments. To help protect the fabric, place a cloth over the steamer nozzle to prevent water droplets from encountering the fabric. Alternatively, triacetate can be ironed carefully, preferably on the reverse side and, if necessary, through a gauze cloth.

Leather

The surface of grain leather items can be gently wiped with a damp cloth. Use cleaning products specifically designed for leather and make sure to dry the surface thoroughly.

It is natural for the edges and straps of leather products to show signs of wear over time. Leather items can be cared for at home using products specifically designed for leather, such as leather protection creams or leather paint. For shoe care, coloured shoe polishes can be used, while for bags, we recommend colourless leather conditioners.

Balmuir leather bags and shoes come with a dust bag, in which we recommend storing the item. In addition to protecting the pieces from dust, the dust bags help shield them from sunlight and other external factors.

To help a bag retain its shape, you can place tissue paper or a bag insert inside. When storing espadrilles, we recommend placing tissue paper inside the shoes to help them retain their shape.

Down / Feather

Dry cleaning is the preferred method of care for Balmuir down-filled items. To avoid unnecessary washing, air the down or feather item regularly. If you choose to wash the item at home, we recommend washing it in plenty of water. When machine washing, avoid an overcrowded drum to prevent damage to the outer fabric. Always turn the garment inside out before washing.

If necessary, treat areas with more stubborn dirt, such as the collar, with gall soap or a gentle stain-removing soap. Down-filled items should preferably be washed with a detergent specifically designed for down. Alternatively, a mild liquid detergent can be used, provided that only one-third of the normal amount is used.

We recommend tumble drying down-filled items. If air drying, gently fluff the item several times during the drying process to ensure the down is distributed evenly.

Store down-filled items by hanging them in a protective bag, allowing sufficient space for air circulation.
